Bakuchiol is a plant-based alternative to retinol. Although its chemical structure is different from retinoids, it activates some of the same receptors in the skin and supports collagen production and skin cell renewal in a similar way. As a result, it has become known as a natural alternative to retinol – offering similar visible anti-aging benefits, but without the skin irritation, dryness, or sensitivity that retinol typically causes.

Properties of Bakuchiol

  • Promotes the synthesis of the skin's own structural proteins, helping to smooth fine lines and wrinkles
  • Antioxidant protection – helps reduce oxidative stress and visible signs of aging caused by UV radiation
  • Firming effect – improves the appearance of elasticity and tone in sagging or tired-looking skin
  • Evens out complexion – helps even out dark spots, rough texture and redness
  • Suitable for oily and combination skin - limits the oxidation of sebum into pores, making the texture more even
  • Photostable – does not increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation, making it suitable for use both morning and evening
  • Good tolerance – gentler than synthetic retinoids, also suitable for the eye area

Use of Bakuchiol in cosmetics

Recommended dosage: 0.5–1.0%.

Solubility: The product is fat-soluble.

Usage recommendations:

  • facial oils and serums for mature or sun-damaged skin

  • light emulsions for combination and oily skin prone to blemishes
  • treatments that even out the complexion

Usage:

  • Add oil phase; avoid prolonged heating above 75 °C
  • In water-containing creams, add during the cooling phase after the emulsion has formed
  • When using in oil-based mixtures, pre-heating is required at the store
  • May make water-containing products more unstable and may require additional stabilizer
  • It is recommended to use it with antioxidants (such as vitamin E) to protect bakuchiol from oxidation during the product's shelf life.
