How to use Micas

Micas in cosmetics

Micas give a transparent sparkle to cosmetic products. They can be used in both water-based products (creams) and oil-based products (salves, scrubs, lip products). However, in liquid mixtures, micas tend to sink to the bottom of the product (for example, in liquid soap). Micas also give a nice transparent sparkle to lip balms.

Use in melt and pour soap making

Micas blend well with the melt-and-pour soap base, but to avoid clumps, it's better to mix the mica with a small amount of soap, oil or glycerin beforehand.

Micas produce an especially sparkling and intensely colored effect in transparent soap. It's recommended to use a maximum of 5g of mica per 1kg of soap. Using more mica won't intensify the color any further. With a smaller amount, the soap remains transparent, while with a larger amount, it loses transparency. White soap contains titanium dioxide, which makes colors more pastel.

Since micas cannot reflect light in white soap, the color loses its sparkle. To achieve a stronger color, up to 20g of mica per 1kg of soap can be used.

Micas in homemade soap

The sparkle of micas disappears in homemade soap just like in white soap. A large amount (1-5% of the total weight of the soap) is needed to achieve a strong color. Not all micas are suitable for use in homemade soap because their color is unstable at high pH levels. This mainly applies to various purple and lilac colors.
