Mineral composition of green clay
Silicon dioxide (SiO₂, approx. 55%) helps clay swell and bind water.
Aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃, approx. 19%) gives green clay a high cation exchange capacity, which helps remove dirt and oil from the skin's surface.
Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃, approx. 6%) gives the clay a dark greenish-gray color and helps restore minerals.
Magnesium oxide (MgO, approx. 4%)
Potassium oxide (K₂O, approx. 3.7%)
Calcium oxide, sodium oxide, and manganese oxide are present in smaller amounts and supplement the overall trace element content.
The use of green clay in cosmetics
Skincare
Clay attracts excess oil, sweat and dirt, while the powdery texture acts as an exfoliant. The high absorbency of green clay makes it one of the most intensive clays. It is especially suitable for oily skin, but can be overly drying for dry or dehydrated skin.
Masks: Mix 1 part clay with 1.5 parts liquid (spring water, flower water or herbal tea) to form a smooth paste. Apply a thick layer to clean skin, avoiding the eye and lip area. Leave on for about 10 minutes, without letting it dry completely, then rinse thoroughly.
Hair care
Suitable for all hair types as a scalp cleansing treatment.
Scalp mask: apply to damp scalp, leave on for about 10 minutes, then rinse.
Shampoo additive: mix 1-2 tablespoons into neutral shampoo, leave for 5 minutes, then rinse.
Soap making
Cold process soap: mix in water or vegetable oil in a ratio of 1:3 to avoid lumps. Use up to 5 g per 450 g of oils. You can mix the clay with oils before mixing with the lye solution, or mix it into the finished soap mixture before pouring into the mold.
In Melt and pour soap base, use ¼-½ teaspoon per 500 g of soap base.
Not recommended for use: Avoid daily use on dry or very sensitive skin as the high absorbency may remove excessive amounts of natural oils from the skin. Not recommended for use as an ingredient in creams or lip balms.
Interactions with other substances. Clay is a natural mineral with no known incompatibilities with common cosmetic ingredients. Stable in acidic, neutral and alkaline mixtures. Insoluble in water or oil, so in liquid products it will settle to the bottom over time.
When making clay products, use glass, ceramic, or wooden utensils, avoid using metal utensils. It is recommended to use spring or filtered water as the liquid, not tap water.
