Jojoba oil regulates oiliness and suits almost every skin type

Jojoba oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, an evergreen shrub. Despite being called an oil, jojoba is technically a liquid wax ester – its molecular structure resembles the skin's own sebum more closely than any other plant-derived ingredient. This gives it a unique set of qualities: it won’t go rancid like triglyceride oils, absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue, and helps the skin balance its own oil production.

The Jojoba Golden variety is cold-pressed and microfiltered to 0.2 microns, resulting in a clear, golden-yellow oil that’s virtually odourless and stays fresh for a long time.

Benefits of jojoba oil

  • Sebum-like structure – closely mimics the skin's own natural wax esters
  • Sebum-regulating – helps balance oil production in both dry and oily skin
  • Low comedogenicity – does not clog pores, suits problematic skin
  • Fast-absorbing – leaves no greasy residue
  • Long shelf life – highly stable, does not oxidise easily
  • Soothing – helps to calm inflamed or reactive skin
  • Frizz control in hair coats the hair shaft with a protective layer
  • Practically odourless – does not interfere with fragrance

Composition – why jojoba is different

Jojoba isn’t a triglyceride oil; it’s made up almost entirely of long-chain wax esters, the same type of molecules found in human sebum. This is why it behaves so differently from other plant oils in formulation and on the skin.

Eicosenoic acid / gadoleic acid (~71%) is an Omega-9 wax ester that gives jojoba its sebum-balancing properties. No other plant oil contains eicosenoic acid in a comparable concentration. It absorbs easily, and gives jojoba its characteristic light, non-greasy skin feel.

Erucic acid (~14%) is an Omega-9 fatty acid that provides excellent slip and acts as a natural silicone alternative. It softens skin with a silky texture without leaving an oily film on the surface.

Oleic acid (~10%) helps maintain skin and hair softness and shine.

Jojoba also contains small amounts of palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, behenic acid, and vitamin E, which contributes to its outstanding oxidative stability.

Using jojoba oil in skin care

Jojoba suits dry, normal, oily, sensitive, and problematic skin – one of the few oils that genuinely works across all skin types. Its sebum-like structure means it is well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most oils. Its comedogenicity rating is 2 on a 4-point scale.

Where jojoba works best:

Facial oils and serums – Jojoba is a popular choice for facial oil bases. It can be used on its own or mixed with active oils like rosehip or sea buckthorn. Its lightweight texture makes it perfect for everyday use on the face.

Face cleansing oil and makeup remover – jojoba gently melts away makeup and excess sebum without drying out the skin. Wipe off with a warm cloth for best results.

For creams and lotions, add jojoba to the oil phase at 5–20% of the formula. It enhances the skin feel of heavier emulsions and helps extend their shelf life thanks to its stability.

Lip balms – include 10–30% of the formula to provide slip and a light, non-waxy texture.

Body oils – use at 50–100%, blended with heavier oils for a more nourishing result.

Beard oils – jojoba is a classic beard oil base, mimicking the sebum of facial skin and softening beard hair.

Using jojoba oil in hair care

Jojoba coats the hair shaft rather than penetrating it, forming a protective layer that smooths the cuticle, adds shine, and controls frizz. It suits medium- and high-porosity hair well. For low-porosity hair, it can sit on the surface without benefit, so use sparingly or as a finishing oil only.

Hair oils and serums – For frizz control and shine, apply a small amount to damp or dry hair ends.

Scalp treatments – jojoba's sebum-like composition makes it well-suited for scalp application. It helps balance scalp oiliness and soothes dry or irritated scalps. Massage a small amount into the scalp and leave for 20–30 minutes before shampooing.

Solid conditioner bars and hair balms – use at 10–20% of the formula for a light, conditioning effect.

Using jojoba oil in soap

Because jojoba is a wax ester rather than a triglyceride, it does not saponify in the same way as other oils. In cold process soap it acts as a superfat rather than contributing to the soap structure. Use at a maximum of 5% of total fats. Above this level it reduces lather noticeably.

In melt-and-pour soap base it can be added at up to 10–15 g per kg as a conditioning superfat.

Storage note

Jojoba is one of the most stable plant-derived ingredients available. Its wax ester structure means it does not oxidise or go rancid the way triglyceride oils do. Store in a sealed container below 20°C. At refrigerator temperatures jojoba solidifies – allow it to return to room temperature before use. Shelf life of up to 5 years when stored correctly.
