Selling Scented Candles

Under the CLP regulation currently in effect in the European Union, scented candles intended for sale need to be registered with the Poison Information Centre and must include a UFI code.

The UFI code is a 16-character mix of letters and numbers used to identify the composition of hazardous mixtures. It helps Poison Centres quickly determine the product's makeup and provide effective guidance during emergencies.

You can create a UFI code with the UFI Generator, and a matching PCN notification needs to be submitted through the ECHA portal.

You can choose to handle product registration and notification yourself or order it as a service. If you opt for the service, it can cost several hundred euros.

Utilize pre-registered candle recipes and UFI codes.

If you're just starting your candle business or want to test the popularity of different scents on the market, the ready-made candle recipes and pre-registered UFI codes from fragrance oil manufacturer Aspol can help. Candles made with these recipes don't require re-registration as long as you strictly adhere to the recipe conditions

The requirements are as follows:

  1. Candles must be made from wax that is recognized as safe under the REACH regulation. All candle waxes sold at Relumee meet this criterion.
  2. Use ASPOL fragrance oils, ensuring only one fragrance oil is used per candle. Recipes typically rely on fragrance oil concentrations of 6%, 8%, or 10%, though some oils are limited to lower concentrations. Always verify the availability of your desired concentration before making candles!
  3. You can find safety data sheets for each recipe at the bottom of every Aspol fragrance oil product page. For instance, the product "The Nights of Arabia" includes files labeled "Candle SDS 6%", "8%", and "10%," with the percentage showing the fragrance oil content in the product. Aspol fragrance oils with UFI Green label do not need UFI code, but labeling requirements must still be followed. Some UFI Green oils have lower maximum usage rate. For example, Vanilla Cedar Lavender has a usage rate up to 7%.

Fragrance oils with UFI Ready label must also include UFI codes. You can find the necessary safety information and UFI codes for candles in the candle safety data sheet, section 2.2.

  4. Use ASPOL liquid candle dyes or our candle color tablets for coloring, if you like. These dyes are free of hazardous components, so there's no need to list them separately in the recipe. Feel free to use any color or mix them as you wish.
  5. No additional hazardous components can be included in the product.

Label Candles Properly

Candles need proper labeling, and each Aspoli fragrance oil product page includes a candle safety data sheet with all the required packaging details. Section 2.2 outlines the warning and hazard statements and labels. UFI Ready fragrance oils also come with a UFI code.

Older fragrance oils have CLP sticker samples provided in the product documentation. Newer fragrance oils no longer have a pre-formatted candle sticker sample, you can use the Aspol candle label generator (Link) to prepare the stickers.

You can use the Polish generator in Estonian or English by translating it using the translation function of your web browser.

To use the generator, choose the fragrance oil and its concentration from the drop-down menu, then enter the company information, product name, weight, and batch number.

You can import the PDF sticker into Canva, for example, and customize it to suit your preferences.

Attention! CLP label information changes depending on the fragrance oil dosage and has different UFI codes for various concentrations. For example, a CLP sticker marked 6% is designed for candles with fragrance oil levels up to 6%.
